February 5, 2018 is the last day to comment on the Trump Administration’s proposal to cut back protections for tipped workers.
The present rule allows tipped employees to keep tips rather than being forced to share them with other employees.
The Trump administration proposal would allow employers to compel pooling of tips and give employers an opportunity to divert tips to the establishments operating expenses.
More than $5 billion in tips could end up in the pockets of employers, according to the Economic Policy Institute.
Here’s the case put forth by the Trump administration in support of allowing employers to impose tip pooling.
Administration spokesman admits “This proposal would give workplaces the freedom to share tips among more employees,” he said. Or, put another way, the employer can control what happens to tips.
Public comment on the rule closes February 5, 2018. Here’s the link to the public comment page. At this writing, the website says they’re having intermittent trouble with their application for comments.
Sounds too much like when the Administration closed down ACA signup site every Sunday during the enrollment period. I hope I’m just being overly suspicious.
