Whether you describe yourself as frightened, dismayed, or energized by the election of 2016, it’s time to move beyond emotion to action if we genuinely expect positive change.
It is clear that a government and a society that reflect the real values of this country cannot be taken for granted. Only about 60% of eligible voters got to the polls in November.
As the reality of one party control of the national government sank in, lots of us realized we didn’t know much about government, politics, Constitutional law, and governance.
And we found that the policies profferred by those in governmental leadership don’t serve the country as a whole.
We’ve been blessed by groups that have popped up to channel the energy released by Trump and his enablers.
My goal at VisionaryVoter is to collect links to potent resources and to highlight issues and events that might otherwise get swept away by the next news cycle.
November got personal
I found that decades after I became a consumer lawyer, I am, at base, a political science major. I’m unable to turn off the importance of politics in our lives to simply practice law.
Closest to home, the laws I now use to protect average homeowning suburbanite families are at risk of being gutted. A contest between big banks and my clients threatens to become yet more lopsided.
Organically, I believe that we are better off by caring for more than ourselves; that change is challenging; and talents and advantages are not evenly distributed. Extreme variance in wealth and opportunity can destroy us.
My call is for each of us to take personal responsibility, not only for our own families, but also for the health of our society and the health of our planet.
November, 2016 is a wake up call. Stand up, stretch, and get active.
2018 is just around the corner.
