Emoluments clause
Within days of the inauguration, CREW brought suit against Trump for violation of the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution.
No title of nobility shall be granted by the United States: and no person holding any office of profit or trust under them, shall, without the consent of the Congress, accept of any present, emolument, office, or title, of any kind whatever, from any king, prince, or foreign state.
The suit claims that Trump’s business interests, especially the lease of the publically owned Old Post Office Building in Washington DC, where he is effectively both landlord and tenant, violates the Constitution. The First-Amended-Complaint adds as plaintiffs individuals and entities harmed by his business-as-usual approach to public office.
