Extreme proposals
In decrying proposed cuts to SNAP (food stamps), the New York Times made a broader point about legislative extremes:
Extreme proposals are a way to make less extreme proposals seem acceptable.
The proposed cuts to food stamps is 25%. We mustn’t allow ourselves to think that any lesser cut to this program is a victory.
More hunger does not make us great. Or admirable. Or wise.
