The announcement of the end of DACA leaned heavily on the claim that these young people were taking jobs from Americans and driving down wages.
Setting aside the issue of whether any of that is true or not, the “driving down wages” bit jangled in my head a bit.
If we oust 800,000 young, ambitious kids, will wages for the remaining workforce go up?
Goodness knows, too many in this economy don’t earn a living wage now.
But are Trump’s business buddies really in favor of higher wages? The people who oppose any minimum wage, much less an increase in the minimum wage?
And what about the loss of 800,000 consumers who buy goods and start families and patronize American businesses? That’s good for the economy?
But I realize that I’m afflicted with a desire for consistency and coherence.
Not to be found in ending DACA, I’m afraid.
